Prize awarding ceremony of Expo Children Emissaries contest was held on
November 5, 2006. After months of competition, more than 100 primary and middle
school students won the title of "Expo Children Emissaries".
Based on the theme of "Protect the environment, safeguard the ecology,
develop civilisation and create a harmonious city", the contest attracted more
than 100,000 students from over 300 schools in Shanghai. They attended various
events including taking part in an Expo English camp, planting trees, raising
pet animals, making environmental friendly artifacts and etiquette training.
Those who got through the preliminary competitions, the semi finals and the
final were designated as "Expo Emissaries".
During the award ceremony, the "Expo Children Emissaries" sent the Bureau of
Shanghai World Expo Coordination a 10-meter-long painting to show their concept
of the Expo theme "Better City, Better Life". Huang Yaocheng, Deputy Director of
the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination accepted it with pleasure, saying
that the awarding of the title of "Expo Emissary" was not only a symbol of honor
for the children but also a responsibility. He said, "This year's contest had a
theme related to the environment and I hope children will be models in
protecting the environment and show others the way to make Shanghai a more
beautiful city."
