China to provide $100 mln to encourage attendance to Expo

After the approval of the registration report of the Expo2010 Shanghai by the
BIE, Mr. Zhou Yupeng, Vice Mayor of Shanghai, deputy director of the Shanghai
Expo Executive Committee and director of the Shanghai World Expo Coordination
Bureau, said that the 100 million US dollars of financial aid, as promised
during China’s bid to host the Expo2010, is now in place to encourage attendance
of the developing countries at the Shanghai World Expo.
World Expo artery Line 7 commences construction
Construction of a new subway line, which was first approved by the central
government of the country, started on Nov.24, 2005. The new metro line, RT No.
7, will be 35 kilometers long, and is expected to be completed by the end of
2009. Five of its stations are located within the World Expo area, making it a
key artery for the Expo 2010.
Construction of South Xizang Rd. Tunnel Starts
The construction of a new tunnel across the Huangpu River, which will only be
used for World Expo traffic through 2010, began on Nov.25, 2005, marking the
beginning of large-scale ancillary infrastructure construction for the World
Expo area. The tunnel is expected to be completed in 2008. Between then and the
start of the Expo, it will be used exclusively for vehicles involved in
construction of Expo pavilions. The tunnel will open to the general public after
the Expo wraps up in October 2010.
Yangshan Deep-water Port starts operation
The first phase of the Yangshan Deep-water Port and the bonded area at the
port began operation on December 10, marking a major breakthrough in the city’s
efforts to turn itself into an international shipping hub and creating better
conditions for Shanghai to establish itself as an international transshipment
hub in north east Asia and for China to grow into a top maritime shipping
country.
“Unforgettable World Expos”seminar held
A seminar on“Unforgettable World Expos”was held recently, which was jointly
sponsored by the Human Resources Department and the Talent Development Center of
the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination. Mr. David Anderson, professor of
University of British Columbia, Vancouver, delivered a keynote speech at the
seminar.
World Expo volunteers gather for community services
On December 4, 2005, an event for“community volunteer service after
Shanghai’s successful bid for the Expo 2010”was held at the square before the
Jing’an Park. The event, with a theme of“Splendid World Expo and Beautiful
Life”, was organized by the Youth League Committee and the publicity department
of the World Group.
