Convenes Its Third Meeting in Beijing |

Shanghai 2010 World Expo National Organizing Committee convened its third
meeting on December 27, 2005 in Beijing. Chinese Vice-Premier Wu Yi, who is also
concurrently chairperson of the Shanghai 2010 World Expo National Organizing
Committee and member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, and
Mr. Chen Liangyu, Shanghai CPC Party Secretary, member of the Political Bureau
of the CPC Central Committee and First deputy Chairman of the Shanghai 2010
World Expo National Organizing Committee, attended the meeting and delivered
speeches respectively. The meeting called for a full-scale preparatory process
for the Shanghai World Expo following the approval of the registration report
and to base upon the guideline of scientific development and the people-first,
self-innovation and no-extravagance principles. Madame Wu Yi said in her
speech that the preparatory work for the Shanghai World Expo has been
progressing smoothly as a result of the successful, meticulous and hard work by
members of the Shanghai World Expo Organizing Committee since the second meeting
of the committee, particularly since the unanimous approval of the registration
report of the World Expo Shanghai on December 1 this year at the 138th assembly
of the BIE, which signifies that the legal status of the World Expo Shanghai has
been officially recognized and the preparation for it has entered a substantive
stage. She added that the following tasks should be executed in 2006 in
accordance with the requirement of "running a successful World Expo" made by the
CPC Central Committee. They are: firstly, to pool together wisdom and powers
from various sides to further deepen the meanings of the theme of the Shanghai
World Expo; Secondly, to pull out all stops to promote the relocation work,
excellent designs of the pavilions and stadiums, and to conscientiously organize
the construction of the infrastructure facilities and pavilions in the Expo
Park; thirdly, to extend invitations to participants, investors and businesses,
with emphasis on extending invitations to international participants; fourthly,
to step up efforts in the Expo promotion and publicity in order to further boost
the awareness of the World Expo Shanghai in the world; fifthly and finally, to
strengthen relevant systems and institutions while sticking to the principle of
running a clean World Expo in accordance with legal rules. Mr. Chen Liangyu
said that the preparatory work for the World Expo Shanghai has made significant
progress with the support of members of the Organizing Committee and under the
correct leadership of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council. In what
follows, Shanghai should shoulder heavy responsibility and pressure, and the
city should turn the preparation of the World Expo into an important field in
carrying out the philosophies of scientific development and building a
harmonious society while further intensifying its efforts in the boost software
and hardware constructions and giving prominence to science and technology in
running the Expo and the inheritance of culture and humanities to ensure the
successful hosting of the World Expo Shanghai. Five documents, including the
"Major points for the Preparatory work for Shanghai World Expo in 2006", were
nodded at the meeting. Shanghai mayor Han Zheng, vice mayor Zhou Yupeng and Mr.
Wan Jifei, Chairperson of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade
(CCPIT) made presentations and reports on relevant aspects related to the
preparation for the Shanghai World Expo respectively.
