Ancient City in the Setting Sun
Date:26/08/2006

Talking about the southern part of Shanghai, what first comes to one's mind is the old Chenghuangmiao (City God Temple), and Yuyuan Gardens. However, something more strikes me: Freshly cleaned chamber pots arranged in a line on the curbs exposed to the sun, and the antique markets on the crowded Fuyou Road at dawn. The company where I work moved from the bridge edge on Sichuanlu to Dongjiadu. When first being there, I felt that the road names were so novel: Xundaojie, Zhuxingmatoujie, Doushijie, Miezhulu, Yinxiannong, and Tiandengnong, all of which overflow with local flavor. The human landscape is not scarce there. Ziyuan Gardens and the former residence of Xu Guangqi are 200 meters away from Xiao Nanmen Qiaojialu. The former has been the residence of Mr. Wang Yiting, renowned contemporary artist, industrialist, and president of Shanghai Chamber of Commerce. The place is renown for the Chinese catalpa planted there. Inside is a tower-shape building combining Chinese and Western styles. Sometimes in summer after work when it is still early, I walk along the streets and lanes treading my long shadow, and take out my sketch book to catch the sight of ancient city in the setting sun…
