Date:08/05/2008

On April 13, Yu Zhengsheng, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee and Han Zheng, Vice Secretary of CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee and Mayor of Shanghai, conducted an inspection tour around the Expo Site and convened a special symposium. Yu Zhengsheng pointed out: running a successful World Expo is a great event to both Shanghai and the whole country; it is an important opportunity for Shanghai to realize the scientific development and it can boost the morale of Shanghai people, which will be a great impetus to the development of Shanghai's future and the improvement of people's living standard. We must strengthen the sense of mission and sense of responsibility and make detailed plan for the preparation work. Only by complying with the demands of the central government and winning the support of the whole country to create an atmosphere of active participation of all people can we run a successful, splendid and unforgettable venue.

After hearing the reports of the relevant officials from the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination, Yu Zhengsheng pointed out: the preparation work for World Expo is of great importance, so every citizen must do his share. We must realize that running the World Expo is a national conduct and Expo Shanghai is a national undertaking, therefore, we must strictly fulfill our mission and seek maximum help in accordance with the requirements of the central government and the organizing committee, closely win the support of all the Chinese across the world and enhance communication with BIE.

Yu Zhengsheng added: It is necessary to gather the strength and wisdom of all walks of life, make detailed plan for the preparation work, insure that there are enough personnel working for this purpose and guarantee the smooth and orderly progress of the preparation issues. We must make a sound 600-day action plan for the Expo and build up a municipal coordination mechanism which will clarify the specific responsibilities, tasks, measures, schedule and milestones. Issues such as the comprehensive regulation of streets and lanes, improvement of the people's living standard and the city image, and the construction of spiritual civilization also need detailed analysis and promotion plan. It is imperative to learn from Beijing's experience in preparing for 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Driven by World Expo, Shanghai will surely witness advancement and improvement in terms of city appearance, citizens' life and civilization level.

Han Zheng pointed out at the symposium: the preparation of Expo Shanghai is progressing smoothly. We must take full advantage of the opportunity of running an Expo to promote the development in various sectors. We must formulate a detailed and specific work plan to involve the participation of all the citizens in Shanghai and all the Chinese across the world. On the basis of the previous achievement, we should spare no efforts to improve the city image and the urban construction and management level, promote the public service level by improving the social "Service Windows", and further improve the civil ethics so as to fully present to the world the praiseworthy image of Shanghai's urban civilization.
