At the distant Construction Site of Expo Shanghai, there're also many workers
from Sichuan quake-hit region. After the Sichuan Wenchuan Earthquake, some had
lost contact with their family members and relatives, houses of some workers are
destroyed and relatives of some worker are victimized. When difficulties arise
in one place, aid comes from everywhere. The builders of World Expo from Sichuan
become the focus of us. It is a common action for Expo people to attend love and
care to victims not in the quake-hit areas.
After the Earthquake, construction headquarter office of Expo Shanghai
Project immediately contacts each construction project departments to make clear
of how many number of workers with household registration in Sichuan and status
of damage to them for all construction projects. "World Expo Village (Section
A), there are 48 workers from Sichuan: 48 of them are affected by the quake;
houses of 6 workers are collapsed, houses for other 42 workers are subject to
damage to different extents. For Rail Transport 13 Station at the Expo Site,
there are 38 workers from Sichuan; two of them are affected by the quake; one of
them lost his family members; and family members of one worker are injured. For
the Performance Center, there are 40 workers, 40 of them are affected by the
quake, houses of 7 workers are collapsed and houses of 33 workers are subject to
damage......" It is reported from statistics that there are total of 900 workers
working on the construction site of Expo Shanghai and 189 workers are affected
by the powerful earthquake, among which one migrant worker lost his family,
family members of two workers are injured and houses of another 187 workers are
collapsed or seriously damaged. According to a staff of project department of
the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination, "After we get the information
timely, we actively organize to condole with the affected workers and assist
them to get connected with their family and provide assistance to them as much
as practical. At present, related department already organizes some seriously
affected worker to go back home safely."
Blood is thicker than water; assistance is from neighborhood watches and
unity is strength. A network woven by love and care connects each construction
site of the Expo Site Project to console heart of 900 workers from the quake-hit
areas. At the completion of basement structure, Expo Center project department
is actively organizing staff to donate money to quake victims to extend our care
and warm. Expo Village, Expo Boulevard, Dapu Road Tunnel, and Rail Track No. 13
station projects also donate pension and phone card to affected worker and try
our best to help them reconstruct their home.
There're many Sichuan workers engaged in "World Expo Section III of China
Construction Third Engineering Bureau" project. After the earthquake, they are
worried about their family very much. Project department leaders timely organize
people to assist them to get connected with their family. After they knew
everything is fine, they all continue to devote themselves in construction of
Shanghai. We are deeply moved by the Sichuan workers. Our staff also organizes a
special donation spontaneously in addition to the donation to the quake-hit
areas, i.e., a special donation for Sichuan workers who still bravely continue
to work although their hometown is destroyed. From the donation, we give our
special care and love to those workers. One of affected worker said, "We are
worried about our hometown and we want to go home, but we don't know how to help
them if we go home. We really appreciate your care and attention. From TV
program, we know people all around the world are helping our hometown. So we
stay here and continue to work hard. I think that is what we can do to reward
the society, and that is the biggest support to reconstruction of our hometown."
Assistance and love from Expo Shanghai to Sichuan quake-hit areas are
continued although the distance is several thousands kilo meters away.
