China's Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture will apply for the Urban Best
Practices Area of Shanghai World Expo to present its minority characteristics,
the prefecture has told a visiting delegation of Expo organizers in the
province.
The prefecture will present its "national unity" theme during the Expo, an
autonomous official told Zhou Hanmin, deputy director general of the Bureau of
Shanghai World Expo Coordination.
It will apply the third type of UBPA case that is use multimedia, Internet or
forum to mould the presentation, the official added.
Yanbian is the only case that presents the ethnic theme among all the 113
applied UBPA cases from the world, said Zhou. Zhou hoped the prefecture could
fully present its culture, folk arts and life styles during the Expo.
The 42,700 square kilometers Korean Autonomous Prefecture is the largest
region, including six cities and two counties, where ethnic Koreans live in
compact communities and the only minority prefecture in northeast China.
The total population in Yanbian is about 2.185.500, of which 58.34% are
Chinese, 38.76% Korean, 2.9% are other minorities.
