The first girder on the China Pavilion at Shanghai Expo was suspended today, signaling construction of the most anticipated structure has entered a vital stage.

The 32-ton steel girder will connect the four main columns that support the pavilion called“The Crown of the East," which will also house a joint pavilion for provinces and cities, as well as separate pavilions for Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

The roof of the building is expected to be completed by the end of the year and the entire structure is scheduled to be finished by next September.

The 120,000-square-meter area explores the theme "Chinese Wisdom in Urban Development," emphasizing traditional Chinese values of harmony, spirituality and balance with nature.
