The mayor of Montreal, Canada, presented a gift of history to Shanghai Expo
organisers–the official Expo documents of the city that hosted the World Expo in
1967.
Mayor Gerald Tremblay, in presenting the documents, noted that Montreal and
Shanghai have been sister cities for 22 years, enjoying extensive exchanges in
economic areas, technology, culture and education. He said he wanted to share
Montreal’s experience with Shanghai Expo organizers.
Hong Hao, director of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination,
welcomed the delegation and explained preparations for the Expo. Some of the 174
participants, including Canada, have already negotiated contracts, he said.
One of the Expo highlights, the Urban Best Practices Area, has received 46
applications from 34 cities. An international selection committee will choose
around 30 outstanding examples of coping with urban problems and enriching city
life. The theme of the Expo is“Better City, Better Life.”
Tremblay said Montreal would like to showcase its environmentally friendly
practices in solid waste disposal and environmental protection in
UBPA.
